Sun,Water, Baby Backs, Coleslaw- Ahhhhh - 4th of July!!!

Yes, today is the 4th of July.  I hope all of you had a great day - I can attest to the fact ours was wonderful.  The weather has been perfect - sun with a light breeze to keep you cool, great food on the grill, time to just read a book in the shade and a view of the river and all of the crazy boat people.
We have spent the last 2 weeks camped on the bank of the John Day River in WA State, where it empties into the Columbia.  The surrounding area is desert, but amazingly has the right terroir for wine as well as wheat.  This area of the country produces a great amount of wheat and it is shipped down the Columbia to Portland where about 50% of it is then reshipped internationally.  The fields sit among the desert areas and the view is amazing. When we got here, many of the fields were still green.  Almost overnight those same fields seemed to turn gold and I  am sure they are now about ready to be harvested.  Daily we see tugs bringing barges upstream to await that harvest.  We are getting some sun , having a wonderful time and generally enjoying the areas' scenery.

The people come and go quite regularly at this campground and they come with an assortment of campers, and I sue that term loosely.  This camper was next to us for the 4th of July weekend.  The wonderful man who had cobbled this together had just finished some Chemo/radiation treatments the prior week and his wife reminded him that they had a family weekend planned - so he just brought what he had - 2x4s, a screw gun, a mattress in the bed of the truck and voila' - a camper.  It worked, although everyone, including the 2 who stayed in this, wondered why it did not fly away in the 20-30mph winds we had all weekend.

We are moving on soon and i will post more later.  Until then..........
Drive Safe and Retire Early.
